Who it is for

Stronger families do not all look the same.

The Community Door is open to mothers, children, fathers, co-parents, caregivers, kinship caregivers, extended family, and other safe support systems around a child. If you are part of holding a family together, this door is for you.

Our work honors safe reconnection, co-parenting, kinship support, caregiving, and chosen family when they are centered on safety and the well-being of the child. We do not require a family to look one particular way to be supported.

Who walks through

Everyone in the picture.

Mothers and children

Whether or not housing is part of the picture, and whether or not you have been part of a Nia Imani program before.

Fathers and co-parents

Fathers and co-parents raising, supporting, or working toward safe involvement with their children.

Kinship caregivers

Grandparents, aunts, uncles, siblings, and other relatives raising children who are not their own.

Extended and chosen family

The people a family counts on, whether or not the relationship is legal or biological.

Families who lived here

Residency ends. Relationship does not. Former residents stay connected through this door.

Neighbors and community

People looking for credible information about what exists in Milwaukee and how to reach it.

What you can access

Credible resources,
and someone to
walk through them with.

Families deserve access to resources they can trust. The difference between a phone list and a warm referral is whether anyone follows up.

We connect families to credible information, supportive services, and community partners, and we stay in it long enough to know whether the connection actually worked.

The Community Door works because of the partners behind it. If you are a service provider, clinic, school, congregation, or agency, there are two ways to work with us: send families our way, or deliver your service through this door.
